"Flautist and pianist Anne Evans and reeds wizard Dick Lee combined virtuosity with wit, feeling and not a little soul. The eclectic nature of the programme was hinted at right from the start, as the pair strolled on stage sounding out pawky flute and clarinet variations on that hoary old Scots standard, Duncan Gray, followed by some excursions into bluesy bagpipe mode. As well as Lee's own deliciously wayward compositions (bearing suitably bizarre titles such as The Cat's Pyjamas and Mental Blockade), there were pieces by Shostakovich and Debussy - a mellifluous alto sax and piano arrangement of the latter's Arabesque No 1 and a jauntily staccato Golliwog's Cakewalk. Rippling harmony lines in Lewin's Nostalgia d'Espana highlighted the duo's togetherness and that jazz classic Lover Man became a sort of shady flute nocturne, while there can't be many sounds quite like that of Lee's bass clarinet in full gallumphing flight." Jim Gilchrist, The Scotsman. |
"From Shostakovich to The Pink Panther via some of Dick Lee's own jazz-influenced compositions and arrangements, Anne Evans and Dick Lee weaved an eclectic path through the musical firmament. Dick Lee dazzled on a variety of woodwind instruments, from the rich, dark tones of the bass clarinet to the unusual, distinctly oriental sounding Hopf treble recorder used in a lively rendering of Gershwin's I Got Rhythm. An interesting, jazz-influenced arrangement of Debussy's Arabesque No 1 and the Golliwogg's Cakewalk was performed on alto sax and piano, while in the rarely performed Nostalgia d'Espana by the British composer, George Lewin, Dick on the clarinet and Anne on the flute were particularly empathetic - as befits a husband and wife who are both consummate musicians. The Santa Vittoria Suite, with the lovely Vineyard by Dave Trouton, was a fitting conclusion to an unusual, enjoyable concert." Neil Jones, The Herald. |
